The biennial Farnborough International Airshow returns to Hampshire this month for its 2026 edition, and the five-theme programme the organisers have printed on the marquee — Global Security, Advanced Technology & AI, Supply Chain, Sustainability, Future Workforce — reads like an accurate diagnostic of where the aerospace and defence industry is spending the second half of the decade. The first three days of the show are trade-only; the final two open to the public. In practice, the working order book — commercial widebody orders, defence procurement announcements, dual-use partnerships, and the space-industry sidebars — clears in the trade days.

FIA 2026 arrives in an unusually loaded strategic moment. European defence spending is now structural rather than cyclical. Indo-Pacific procurement conversations that were previously carried out in bilateral rooms are increasingly public. The commercial-aviation supply chain is finally on the far side of its post-pandemic delivery bottleneck. And the advanced-air-mobility category — eVTOLs, hybrid-electric fixed-wing, autonomy-adjacent regional flight — has grown up enough to bring its serious players to Farnborough as first-class exhibitors rather than tech-corner curiosities.

Global Security: the theme, and the industrial argument beneath it

The Global Security theme sits, deliberately, at the top of the show’s five-theme programme. The strategic subtext is that the industrial argument for defence expansion — new defence technologies, shifting geopolitical priorities, supply-chain resilience, and industrial capacity — is now the aerospace-industry conversation rather than a sidebar to it. European primes will be at Farnborough with expanded production commitments, multi-year procurement anchor tenants, and — this is new — visible strategic capital raising to underwrite the industrial capacity expansion. The uncrewed-systems track is where the AI conversation intersects with the tactical-operations conversation most directly. Loitering munitions, reconnaissance UAS, uncrewed combat aerial vehicles, loyal-wingman concepts, and counter-UAS architectures will populate the exhibition floor in force. The Ukraine-and-Middle East lessons of the last three years continue to reshape the international force-structure and procurement conversations, and Farnborough 2026 is where a large share of that reshaping happens in front of the buyers.

Supply chain: the make-or-break industrial theme

The Supply Chain theme, on the printed programme, sounds like corporate housekeeping. In the trade-day sessions, it is the make-or-break industrial theme. Aerospace and defence supply chains — sized through the 2010s for a low-conflict, moderate-commercial-growth environment — are being rebuilt while they run. Power semiconductors, precision-machined titanium and aluminium components, high-temperature alloys, composite materials, additive-manufactured spare parts, avionics-grade printed-circuit assemblies, and rare-earth-magnet supply are all pinch points across the industry.

The aerospace and defence industries face a skilled-labour shortfall across engineering disciplines, precision machining, avionics integration, and — critically — the fleet-operations trades. Multiple exhibitor stands will run recruitment programming; national delegations will be recruiting as well. The talent problem is real, and Farnborough is where the industry does part of the work.

Commercial widebodies: fleet renewal continues

The commercial-aviation side of Farnborough — the widebody and narrowbody order announcements, engine-selection decisions, and MRO commitments that historically anchor a Farnborough news cycle — is expected to be busy this year. Fleet renewal, the delayed post-pandemic replacement wave, and the delivery-schedule negotiations between Airbus, Boeing, engine OEMs (GE Aerospace, Rolls-Royce, Pratt & Whitney) and the airlines will fill several days of the trade programme.
