Barcelona, 3–6 March. Mobile World Congress returned to the Fira Gran Via with the GSMA quietly noting that it had sold out every exhibition hall for the first time since the pandemic. The vendor floor was denser than in 2024, the AI messaging was louder, and — for the first time in a while — the phone launches showed up on stage looking like actual product decisions rather than PowerPoint filler.
The headline device stories came from Xiaomi, Samsung and Nothing. The headline platform story came from Google, which is now visibly using Gemini to reset the Android AI layer underneath every OEM in the hall. The headline enterprise story — dull, boring, easy to miss, but the most important line item in the operator business models — was AI-native RAN, telco cost structure, and sovereign networks. And the surprise busiest booth of the show, for anyone counting, belonged to Lenovo, which showed up in Barcelona with a laptop roadmap that made most of the smartphone launches feel understaffed.
MWC 2025 was the moment the mobile industry stopped apologising for being unglamorous and started running its actual playbook — smarter cameras, thinner glass, on-device AI, and the very expensive plumbing underneath.
Xiaomi 15 Ultra: the Leica gambit gets seriously photographic
Xiaomi arrived in Barcelona with the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, the second full generation of the company’s marriage with Leica, and it is now a marriage rather than a marketing tie-up. The camera array is where Xiaomi wanted the conversation to be, and rightly so: a 1-inch, 50-megapixel Sony main sensor, a 50MP ultrawide at f/2.2, a 50MP midrange lens at a 70mm-equivalent focal length, and a 200MP periscope at a 100mm equivalent. It is the most serious computational-photography stack any handset maker has shipped this year.
The strategic significance is not that Xiaomi has out-camera’d Apple or Samsung on paper — that argument is old and, honestly, largely resolved. It is that Xiaomi is now competitive at the premium-photography tier while shipping meaningfully more units globally than either of the two Western incumbents at that end of the market. The base Xiaomi 15 launched in China on 2 March; the Ultra was the Barcelona pitch to the European premium buyer. Xiaomi’s European retail push through Q1 and Q2 will tell us whether the Leica-badge premium proposition actually converts at Apple prices.
Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: the thin play, and the honest one
Samsung used MWC to show off the Galaxy S25 Edge, the slimmest Galaxy S device it has ever shipped. Coming after the S25 lineup that dropped at Galaxy Unpacked in January, the Edge is Samsung doing what Samsung has been doing for a decade: using the MWC stage to hedge the flagship story with a device that will get the fashion press excited without cannibalising the S25 Ultra business.
The thin bet is worth taking seriously for two reasons. First, the industrial-design conversation for premium smartphones is genuinely returning after several generations of “camera bump on the back, otherwise the same slab.” Apple’s rumoured iPhone 17 Air had been the design chatter of Q1; the Edge is Samsung answering it before the Cupertino event. Second, thin devices force real trade-offs — battery, thermal, camera stack, structural stiffness — and Samsung’s willingness to make those trade-offs at flagship prices signals confidence in its silicon and cooling architecture.
Samsung’s bendable concept, and Nothing’s mid-range periscope
Samsung also brought a set of concept devices to Barcelona that were, characteristically, the most interesting product on the stand you cannot actually buy. The most photographed was a prototype with a 7.2-inch OLED display that bends in half with controllers on the sides — a hybrid form factor closer to a portable gaming console than a phone. Samsung Display has been shopping variants of this concept for a couple of years; the March 2025 iteration was more finished than earlier ones. Whether it becomes a shipping product before 2026 is the question the Samsung Mobile roadmap team will spend the next twelve months answering.
Meanwhile Nothing, the London-based hardware challenger, used the show to launch the Nothing 3A series, notable primarily for being the first Nothing phone with a triple camera setup and a proper 3x optical zoom periscope at the mid-range price point. That combination — mid-range price, flagship-adjacent camera stack — is where the interesting handset margin work happens. Nothing has been building a coherent design language that is much cleaner than what Samsung and Xiaomi ship at that tier. The 3A is the volume play; whether the volume actually shows up in European carrier channels is what MWC 2026 will tell us.
Google Gemini keeps eating the Android layer
Google, characteristically, did not use MWC to announce hardware. It used it to remind every Android OEM in the hall that Gemini is now the AI substrate underneath the phones they are selling. Circle to Search, on-device Nano models, Gemini Live conversational agents, and a set of new API surfaces for OEM-branded assistants dominated the Google presence. The message to Samsung, Xiaomi, Honor, Motorola, Oppo, Vivo and the rest of the Android cohort was clear: build your differentiation on top of Gemini, because the alternative is losing the AI conversation to Apple Intelligence at the ecosystem-comparison level.
For the OEMs, this is a durable Faustian bargain. Gemini is technically excellent, integrates deeply, and closes an AI-capability gap most of them cannot close alone. It also concentrates a lot of consumer-AI value at Google. The OEMs’ response — Samsung’s own Galaxy AI branding, Xiaomi’s HyperAI, Honor’s on-device model roadmap — is to try to keep a layer of brand-owned assistant capability above the Google-owned substrate. Whether that layer holds through the next two generations is one of the more interesting product-strategy questions in the industry.
Lenovo had the busiest MWC of the big names
The dark horse of the show, at least among the majors, was Lenovo. The Chinese-headquartered PC maker used MWC as a full-scale laptop launch venue, refreshing ThinkPads across the X, T and L lines, showing concept devices including flexible-display and rollable prototypes, and pushing Copilot+ AI-PC branding hard. Lenovo runs its PC business at scale that most of the smartphone majors do not have, and its ability to blanket MWC with hardware suggests a business unit that is genuinely enjoying the AI-PC upgrade cycle.
The broader read on MWC’s PC track is that the AI-PC narrative — Snapdragon X, Intel Core Ultra, on-device NPUs, Copilot+ — is now moving from “will this cycle happen?” to “who wins the second wave of it?” MWC 2025 was a preview of that second wave, and Lenovo was clearly gunning for the first-mover positioning.
The other MWC: telco AI, RAN, and network economics
The half of MWC that does not photograph well but pays the mortgages was the operator-and-vendor business track. The dominant theme this year was AI-native RAN — using machine learning to run radio-access networks with better spectral efficiency, better energy management, better maintenance scheduling. Every large RAN vendor — Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung Networks, Huawei on the parts of the floor where its presence was accepted — pitched AI-inside-the-network platforms. Every large operator — Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Orange, Telefónica, BT — talked about opex-per-site as the metric they now judge these platforms on. Energy savings, not new revenue, remains the primary business case.
Open RAN, after several years of mixed deployment experience, has settled into a more realistic posture: a genuinely useful architecture for operators whose national policy environment demands vendor diversity, and a niche-to-nowhere elsewhere. Rakuten and Vodafone remain the reference deployments; nobody in Barcelona was pretending Open RAN was the default outside those cases.
Sovereign networks, quietly, on the agenda
The corridor conversation that turned up unexpectedly often was sovereign telecommunications. Operators from the Gulf, India, Southeast Asia, Turkey and central Europe talked about domestic-first supply chains, approved-vendor lists, national data residency for network telemetry, and localised AI models for network operations. What began as a US-EU debate about trusted vendors is now a global procurement posture — and the vendors that had built a sovereign-tier reference architecture for their AI-native RAN pitches were the ones getting the second meetings.
6G on the calendar, not on the slide
6G continued its shift from marketing buzzword to standards work. The specific engineering conversations at MWC 2025 covered candidate spectrum bands, AI-native air interfaces, and the beginnings of integrated sensing-and-communication capability. Commercial deployment remains an early-2030s conversation. The interesting shift is that 6G is now being designed for an operator economy where AI is inside the network from day one and energy efficiency is a primary KPI — different starting assumptions to the ones that shaped 5G.
What MWC 2025 actually moved
- The premium-camera fight is a global one, not a US-Korean one. Xiaomi 15 Ultra + Leica is the most credible non-incumbent play.
- Thin and different form factors are back on the premium roadmap. Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge and its concept bendable are both signals.
- Google’s Gemini is the Android AI substrate now. OEMs’ brand layer sits on top of it, not underneath it.
- AI-native RAN is the operator budget line. Energy savings pay for it.
- Sovereign networks are a global procurement posture. Vendors with sovereign-tier stacks are ahead.
Open questions
Does Xiaomi’s European premium push actually clear at Apple-adjacent pricing, or does the retail conversion undercut the launch narrative? Do the OEMs manage to preserve brand-owned AI layers on top of Gemini, or does the Google substrate absorb the differentiation? And does AI-native RAN produce enough operating-cost savings to fund the next wave of network capex, or does it require regulatory tailwinds to close the business case?
Bottom line: MWC 2025 was the year the mobile industry stopped trying to be more exciting than it is and started running its actual business. Xiaomi is a serious global premium contender. Samsung is defending the industrial-design edge. Google owns the AI substrate. Lenovo owns the AI-PC upgrade wave. And the operator business is quietly reengineering itself around AI-inside-the-network economics and sovereign-tier procurement. That is a more honest mobile industry than we have had in a decade — and, if you are a vendor with a plan, a more investable one.
